Tech to host safe driving program

Oct 17, 2013 | General News

Louisiana Tech will offer a distracted and drunken driving education program for students Monday, Oct. 21.
The program is part of UNITE International’s Arrive Alive Tour, which uses a high-tech simulator, impact video and other resources to educate students about the dangers of drunk driving and texting while driving. The simulator allows students to experience the potential consequences of drunk and distracted driving in a controlled environment.
“We decided to host this event in an effort to help educate students about making responsible decisions regarding alcohol use and distracted driving as a whole,” said Chris Medley, counselor/coordinator for alcohol and other drug education at Tech. “We feel there are strong misconceptions about distracted driving and intoxicated driving, and we aim to try and correct those through campaigns.”
The event will take place from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. in Centennial Plaza. Students, faculty and staff are welcome to attend the free program.
“We feel students should come to this event in an effort to not only learn more about the risks involved with distracted driving but to also make a commitment to their selves and their friends that they will act responsibly when getting in a vehicle and also in their everyday behaviors,” Medley said. “Faculty are certainly encouraged to come and are welcome to bring their classes as a group.”
The event is sponsored by the Student Government Association, the Union Board, and Counseling and Career Services. UNITE brings programs like this one to high school and college campuses across the nation.
