The children of West Monroe’s Lenwill Elementary learned about nutrition recently, but more importantly, than had fun in doing so thanks to the Louisiana Tech University Division of Nursing.

Louisiana Tech’s Nursing Division sponsored its first Winter Carnival at the school as part of a community service learning project for Nursing 212: Child Health Maintenance.

The Division of Nursing collaborated with the nutrition and dietetics, and child life programs in the School of Human Ecology to ensure all health needs were included.

Tech nursing, nutrition, and child life studies students created 15 booths specific to health needs in the elementary population.  Games were played, prizes handed out and the sound of laughter wafted through the air as the Lenwill students learned about self-esteem, sports safety, bullying, healthy food choices, physical and dental hygiene at the carnival booths they visited.

Ouachita Parish School Superintendent Dr. Bob Webber visited the carnival and voiced gratitude for Louisiana Tech’s involvement in the event. The school principal, school nurse and teachers said they were excited to see the students smiling and learning important health related content in a fun way.
