Renowned breast cancer researcher to speak as part of New Frontiers lecture series
Louisiana Tech University will host Dr. Robert Clarke, dean for research at Georgetown University Medical Center (GUMC) in Washington, D.C., as the featured speaker for the fifth installment of its New Frontiers in Biomedical Research lecture series.
Clarke will present a lecture titled, “Modeling Endocrine Resistance in Breast Cancer” at 3:30 p.m. March 23 in the auditorium of Louisiana Tech’s Institute for Micromanufacturing (IfM.) A second presentation focusing on breast cancer and related issues will take place in the IfM auditorium at 6:00 p.m., and is open to the general public and local community. Both seminars are free and receptions will follow to give guests an opportunity to meet Clarke.
The presentations are sponsored by Louisiana Tech’s chapter of Sigma Xi, an international honors research society of which Clarke is a distinguished lecturer, and the Lincoln Health Foundation.
Clarke, who also serves as professor of oncology and co-director of the department of oncology breast cancer program at Georgetown’s Lombardi Comprehensive Cancer Center, is recognized as an international leader in breast cancer research and focuses his research on studying how hormones, growth factors, and other related molecules affect breast cancer, and how breast cancers become resistant to hormonal and cytotoxic chemotherapies. Clarke has developed a series of novel hormone resistant breast cancer models that are now widely used in the field. He is currently working on the development and application of genomic and novel bioinformatic methods to data from ongoing translational studies in both humans and experimental models.
A Fellow of the Royal Society of Chemistry, a Fellow of the Royal Society of Medicine, and a Fellow of the Society of Biology in the United Kingdom, Clarke recently completed his tenure as chair of the National Institute on Health’s peer-review study section Basic Mechanisms of Cancer Therapeutics. He had previously served a term as chair of the Basic Science study section for NIH’s National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine.
Clarke sits on the editorial boards of over a dozen international peer review journals, including roles as senior editor for the Journal Cancer Research and associate editor for Endocrine-Related.
The New Frontiers in Biomedical Research lecture series is a year-long, multidisciplinary program that focuses on advancements in the fields of biomedical engineering, biology, physics, and chemistry in an effort to promote understanding of human health and disease. By interacting with leaders in these research fields, the series seeks to expose Louisiana Tech students to growing areas of research and enhance Louisiana Tech’s own impacts in biomedical research.
