COES announces video competition winners
Louisiana Tech University engineering students Evan McDougall and Joseph Higuera have won first and second place, respectively, in the College of Engineering and Science’s 2015 video completion.
McDougall, a junior chemical engineering major, and Higuera, a sophomore mechanical engineering major, earned honors for their videos on “Why the College of Engineering and Science (COES) at Louisiana Tech is Unique.” The videos were created to promote the College of Engineering and Science and Louisiana Tech, showcasing the hands-on nature of education that engineers and scientists receive at Louisiana Tech.
While each of the videos shows the College of Engineering and Science from a slightly different perspective, they each highlight the practical experience that Louisiana Tech engineers and scientists receive both as part of their curriculum and as members of student led organizations.
Allie De Leo, student success specialist for the College of Engineering and Science, notes that the creativity of the videos is not surprising.
“We focus on developing well-rounded engineers and scientists,” De Leo said. “We want our students to not only be great problem solvers, but also great communicators and creators. This video competition has shown just how well-rounded many of our students are, and we couldn’t be more impressed by the work they submitted.”
Higuera and McDougall say that the leap from engineer, particularly one educated at Louisiana Tech, to videographer is a short one.
“Engineering is more than just number-crunching and problem solving,” said Higuera. “It’s art in one of the most pure forms. Engineers are the artists mankind created out of necessity for innovation.”
“Engineers and scientists typically view themselves as left brain thinkers, depending on analyzation and logic to solve problems,” McDougall added. “In reality, problem solving works best when we incorporate creativity and passion into what we do.”
As the first place finisher, McDougall will receive a GoPro Hero3+ Silver Camera and Higuera will receive a 3Dconnexion SpaceMouse for taking second place. Both videos are available at http://coes.latech.edu/students/engineering-and-science-at-louisiana-tech.php.
