Grad Spotlight: Mia Davis

Editor’s note: This is the second in a series on Louisiana Tech University Winter 2018 graduates. Commencement will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, March 3, in the Thomas Assembly Center.

  • Name: Mia Davis
  • Age: 22
  • Hometown: Colorado Springs, Colorado
  • Degree: Associate of Science, Nursing

She admits it sounds cliché, but Mia Davis has felt  a calling to be a nurse and to help people since she was very young.

“When I was a child I spent some time in the hospital, and the nurses were always the ones who helped the most,” she said, “not only with the physical and medical issues but with emotional and personal issues as well.

“That’s what I love about nursing. It’s holistic.”

She’ll be awarded her degree in Tech’s 2018 winter commencement ceremony Saturday, then look to stay for a few years in north Louisiana where she has contacts and will feel most comfortable gaining experience as a new nurse.

She came to Ruston from her home state of Colorado because “Tech kept coming up as I was looking for the best nursing schools.”

“Tech looked very appealing: the 100 percent (licensure exam) pass rate, smaller class sizes, all the things I was most interested in,” she said. “Then I met with Dr. (Donna) Hood and she took me on a tour, showed me everything. That solidified my choice to come here. Everyone was so welcoming, the value was so great. Tuition was way less than anything in Colorado.”

Davis has served as a nurse ambassador by being involved in recruiting activities and giving new students a point person to contact. She also traveled to Nicaragua with a church team for a week one summer to serve as a nurse in a traveling clinic.

“The faculty at Tech Nursing is amazing,” she said. “I feel very prepared by them for sure.”
