First-year engineering students to demonstrate prototypes

May 4, 2018 | Engineering and Science, General News

Students in the Louisiana Tech University College of Engineering and Science Living with the Lab and Living with Cyber programs will present prototypes at the Freshman Design Expo on Tuesday, May 8, 2018.
Over the course of three quarters, first-year engineering students design, construct and test products that they identify serve a need in the community.
The Freshman Design Expo gives students a chance to communicate the details of their products to their fellow students, professors and the public. A key component of the hands-on Living with the Lab and Living with Cyber curricula is a yearlong series of courses in which student teams conceptualize and build prototypes using Arduino and Raspberry Pi microcontrollers.
Sixty-six teams of students will present their projects, outlining their concepts, hardware and software components, interfaces, capabilities, limitations, economic viability and future development plans. Attendees will have the chance to ask questions and learn more about the projects and their development.
Projects will be judged based on difficulty, creativity, construction and innovation. In addition to overall awards for the top projects, teams will have a chance to earn the Rolex Award for the best constructed prototype, the Da Vinci Award for the most creative project, the Patent Pending Award for the most novel yet practical idea, the Shoot the Moon Award for a tough project that may not function completely and the Can-Do Award for the most difficult project that works.
The Expo starts at 4 p.m. in the TONK; awards will be announced at 7:30.
