The American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (AFSP) will hold an “Out of the Darkness” Campus Walk at Louisiana Tech University on April 25 to raise awareness and funds for research, educational programs and support for survivors of suicide loss.
AFSP Campus WalksRegistration and check-in will start at 8:00 a.m. at the Argent Pavilion, located between Joe Aillet Stadium and the Thomas Assembly Center on the Louisiana Tech campus, with the walk beginning at 9:00 a.m. Participants can register online at http://afsp.donordrive.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=donorDrive.event&eventID=3274.
“I lost my sister to suicide about three years ago and I started this walk to do something about her loss of life,” said Josh Chovanec, event organizer and associate registrar at Louisiana Tech. “Starting this walk has made me realize that one person can make a difference. We are on our third walk and have had close to 300 participants, over 20 community vendors contribute, over $10,000 donated to AFSP and have helped start a NAMI student group on campus. As a group, we will continue to spread the word and bring awareness to mental illness.”
According to the AFSP website, suicide claims more lives each year than war, murder and natural disasters combined. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention statistics show that in 2013 (the most recent year for which full data are available), 41,149 suicides were reported in the U.S. – one every 12.8 minutes – making suicide the 10th leading cause of death for Americans.
The Out of the Darkness Campus Walks are the AFSP’s signature student fundraising series, designed to engage youth and young adults in the fight to prevent suicide – the second leading cause of death among people ages 18-24.
“We appreciate the leadership of AFSP and our campus organizers in creating a greater awareness of and support for those who have been impacted by suicide loss,” said Louisiana Tech President Les Guice. “It’s a tragic situation that affects our campus community and impacts the entire Tech Family.”
The AFSP is the leading national not-for-profit organization exclusively dedicated to understanding and preventing suicide through research, education and advocacy, and to reaching out to people with mental disorders and those impacted by suicide.
